Best Places for a Magician to Train from Level 1–30 in MapleStory Classic World

Published All guides

Magicians fight from range: Energy Bolt hits enemies from a distance, and Magic Guard lets your MP soak part of the damage you take. This guide covers the best places for a Magician to train in MapleStory Classic World, from your first Snail on Maple Island to the day you go back to Ellinia for 2nd job at level 30. Nearly every spot below is a short walk from Ellinia.

Level 1–10: Maple Island

Every character starts as a Beginner on Maple Island and moves on to Victoria Island later (Nexon’s Grand Launch Release Notes). Nobody has a job yet, so the route is the same for everyone. The Maple Island guide lists every quest there, and these are the monsters you’ll meet:

A good order is to clear the three Snail Hunting Grounds past the East Entrance to Mushroom Town, then head to A Split Road, where Mai waits. Mai’s quests are an easy way to start:

A Split Road leads both to Southperry and to the fields around Amherst. Maria on A Split Road also has Letter for Lucas: carry Maria’s letter to Lucas in Amherst, then bring Lucas’s Reply back for 120 EXP and a hat.

Orange Mushrooms (Level 8) are the toughest monster on the island, so spend your last few levels on Dangerous Forest or The Field East of Amherst before you ask Shanks in Southperry for a ride to Victoria Island.

Olaf’s training in Lith Harbor

When you reach Lith Harbor, look for Olaf. From level 8 he gives Olaf’s First Training (8 Stumps and 8 Slimes, rewarding 124 EXP, 277 mesos, 8 Red Potions and 8 Blue Potions) and then Olaf’s Second Training (8 Pigs and 8 Orange Mushrooms, rewarding 124 EXP, 277 mesos and 3 Return Scrolls). You’ll find all four monsters on the maps right outside town:

1st job advancement at level 10

At level 10, go to Ellinia and talk to Grendel the Really Old (“All who desire to become a magician, talk to me…”) in the Magic Library. Nexon lists him as the level 10 Magician advancer (Grand Launch Release Notes). Olaf’s own quest text says job advancement opens up at level 10, so head over as soon as you reach it. The walk from the harbor is long, so check the Lith Harbor to Ellinia route, which shows each map on the way.

Best places for a Magician to train: level 10–15

The maps around Ellinia have Stumps, Slimes and Dark Stumps, a good match for your first few Energy Bolts.

The Field South of Ellinia is one map out of town and mixes Stumps, Slimes, Dark Stumps and a few Green Mushrooms. North of town, The Tree That Grew I–III have Stumps and Dark Stumps, with Slimes on I and II and Green Mushrooms on III. If you’d rather stick to one monster, Dungeon, Southern Forest I is all Slimes.

Level 15–20

Green Mushrooms (Level 14) become your main target, and you can mix in Axe Stumps and Blue Mushrooms as you get closer to 20.

Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IV is the simplest of the Tree Dungeons off The Forest North of Ellinia: only Green Mushrooms and Slimes are there. The Forest North of Ellinia itself has Axe Stumps (Level 17), and it’s also where you’ll meet the Magician Job Instructor at level 30. For Blue Mushrooms (Level 19), The Blue Mushroom Forest sits just past The Forest East of Henesys, about five maps from Ellinia through The Forest South of Ellinia.

Level 20–25

Horny Mushrooms (Level 22) are the monster to hunt in this range, and you’ll find them in most of the Tree Dungeons and in the last Southern Forest dungeon.

Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North I pairs them with Slimes, while II, III and V mix in Green Mushrooms. South of town, Downstairs at the Forest connects straight to the Forest of Wisdom and also has a few Lupins (Level 37), so watch out for those.

Level 25–30

Ellinia doesn’t have much in this level range. You can keep going in the Horny Mushroom dungeons, move up to Curse Eyes as you near 30, or travel to the Evil Eye caves past Sleepywood.

Curse Eyes are Level 33, a few levels above you, but Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VIII and Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IX have only Curse Eyes on them. Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VII also has Cold Eyes (Level 40), so skip that one for now. Evil Eyes (Level 27) are a closer match for your level, but they’re much farther away, deep in the Ant Tunnels.

1st-job Magician skills worth knowing

Your skill book is Introduction to Magic. Here’s what each skill does, in its own words:

  • Energy Bolt: uses MP to attack a single enemy in front of you. It goes from Basic Attack 90 at level 1 to 130 at level 20.
  • Magic Claw: hits a single enemy in front of you “twice”; it needs level 1 Energy Bolt. Basic Attack 45 at level 1, 65 at level 20.
  • Magic Guard: “Replaces a portion of damage taken with MP instead of HP,” from 30% at level 1 up to 80% at level 15. It’s handy while your HP is still low.
  • Magic Armor: Weapon Def. and Magic Def. +40 at level 1, up to +120 for 600 sec at level 20 (needs level 3 Magic Guard).
  • Improved MP Recovery: regenerates 1% of Max MP every 10 seconds and boosts MP recovery from items by 10% (25% at level 15).
  • Max MP Increase: Max MP +10% to +25% (needs level 3 Improved MP Recovery).

Monster elements

Your 1st-job attacks don’t name an element, but your 2nd-job skills will, so it helps to know which monsters are weak to what:

Getting ready for 2nd job at level 30

Nexon lists three Magician 2nd jobs at level 30, all from Grendel the Really Old: Wizard (Fire/Poison), Wizard (Ice/Lightning) and Cleric (Grand Launch Release Notes). Their skill books are Fire & Poison Basics, Ice & Lightning Basics and Holy Magic Basics.

The questline The Magician’s Next Journey works like this:

  1. The Magician’s Next Journey (level 30, Magician): talk to Grendel again.
  2. Finding the Instructor: he gives you Grendel the Really Old’s Letter to take to the Magician Job Instructor in The Forest North of Ellinia.
  3. Test of Qualification: the instructor sends you into a hidden area to collect 30 Dark Marbles. A hidden map called Magician’s Tree Dungeon has Level 30 Horny Mushrooms and Curse Eyes in it.
  4. Proof of Qualification: bring The Proof of a Hero back to Grendel.

Steps 1 and 2 give 4,780 EXP each. Since that hidden map has Horny Mushrooms and Curse Eyes, your time in the Tree Dungeons from level 20 on is good practice for the test.

For more monsters in this range, see monsters by level, 11–20 and 21–30, or the Training Spots by Level guide for the levels after 30.
